BRUNSWICKSTOBWASSER-TYPE Tobacco BLACK LAQUER BOXE,

of PAPIER MACHE

Germany, Late 18th Century

Johann Heinrich Stobwasser, b.1740, under the patronage of the Duke of Brunswick, developed a new lacquerproduct.
In 1772, the Stobwasser factory was opened in Berlin, producing mostly boxes, mostly in paper Mache, with a few on copper.

They secured the finest artists executing a highquality of portraiture, landscape and genre paintings, and finishing thepaintings

With a high quality of varnish. These are known asBrunswick (Braunschweig) or Stobwasser boxes. There were several

Generations of painters, and unless signed, it is oftendifficult to attribute them properly. One of the characteristicsappearing

in Stobwasser boxes is not only the quality of painting, but the use of an iron red under-painting.

This Box Was obtained at a HighEnd Estate Sale in West Palm Beach Florida several years ago, I kept box in mypersonal collection and have decided to let it go to a good home. The qualityis incredible, there is some crackling in the outside lacquer finish consistentwith its age..

Box is 4 3/8” Long x 2 7/8” Wideby 1 1/8” Thick and Box is in Very well taken care of condition

The box is typicalof German boxes of the late 1700s and early to mid 1800s made in BraunschweigGermany (see Detlev Richter\'s book \"Lacquered Boxes\" Published bySchiffer in 1989). Braunschweig is the town where Johann Heinrich Stobwasserhad his factory where he mad his famous lacquered ware. This box was probablymade at the Stobwasser Fabrik. The fact that it is unmarked suggests that it isan early one, probably 1780\'s or 1790\'s. Please carefully review the photos asthey are part and parcel of our description.
