Appleton and Company, New York, FIRST EDITION, SCARCE, THREE VOLUMES, ILLUSTRATION,Volume I published in 1868, Volumes II and III in 1881. Very, very hard to find complete, matched set of First Edition of Civil War classic, Vol. 1 has frontispiece engraving of Grant,with extensive collection, we count over 40!, of excellent campaign and battle maps, many fold out, with eight individual folded maps held in pockets at rear board of vols. 2 and 3. The author was an Aide-de-Camp to Grant himself, and so was an eye witness to the detailed accounts in this massive work. Bindings are somewhat worn but are still decoratively embossed, stamped in gold. Very impressive set, covering the early Mississippi River and Western campaigns right through Appomattox. published during first two decades after Appomattox. Over 2000 pages.Volume I is Good with wear to edges,corners, head/heel of spine which is faded,
spine is a bit creased, there is a starting crack to front hinge, though binding
remains quite tight. Title page has four inch tear at spine, and protective
tissue, frontispiece and title page have considerable foxing; there is
scattered light foxing throughout volume. Vols. II,III are VG with
edge,corner wear,very faded spines,some light foxing. Vol. II has one
2 x 3 inches stain on front as shown. Some maps have fold
creases, turned back corners, but remain VG+ & better.
