Monitoring the humidity level in your music room is THE most important maintenance you will ever do.

To this end, we have commissioned Barigo, a scientific instrument company in Germany to produce this user-friendly, precision dial hygrometer.

After a great deal of research, we found that the Barigo hygrometers are the best scientific-grade, mechanical hygrometers available.

We find that the Barigo mechanical hygrometers to be accurate and reliable. A helpful feature is the colour graphics on the dial to indicate appropriate minimum humidity levels for guitars.

This easy-to-read 4″ diameter precision instrument is accurate to a conservative tolerance of 3% and is housed in rugged metal enclosure with a brass ring trim. The dial face clearly indicates the relative humidity percentages complete with colour codes, including red (dangerously low), yellow (caution) and green (optimum).

Each hygrometer has been calibrated by the manufacturer and then double checked here at The Twelfth Fret utilizing a sling psychrometer.

We have encountered many electronic hygrometers that were as much as 25% off from the true reading when used in the 45% RH zone. Our guess is that the inaccuracy is due to the programming, designed for accuracy in the 70% RH (relative humidity) zone for cigar Humidor use. Digital hygrometers offer no allowance for calibration in the roughly 45% to 50% zone commonly ideal for guitars. It is critical that Hygrometers be calibrated for the RH zone where there will be used to ensure best accuracy.

We can calibrate hygrometers at no charge for our customers against a scientific quality “wet-bulb dry-bulb” hygrometer. There is no charge for this service.

We have sold over 500 of these units over the past 8 years. No doubt the internal synthetic \"Supratherm\" element must have a \"life span\" but that said, to date, we have not had one fail.

My opinion is that provided you do not subject it to extremes in temperature or saturate it with dust, it should be trouble free for at least 5 to 10 years.
