Beautiful 1800s E.N. Welch Ogee Clock With Improved 30 Hour Brass Movement:
$95.00

This is a beautiful old Ogee clock that is done in what I believe is Rosewood veneer with a reverse painted design on the door. The clock measures 25 3/4 tall x 15 1/4 wide x 3 7/8 deep. It still has the label inside which is marked \"Improved 30 Hour Brass Clock E.N. Welch Mfg. Co., Forestville, Conn. The case is in pretty good antique condition with a small piece of veneer missing on the bottom and a split in the back panel. The latch that holds the clock closed doesn\'t function. I have the key, but it doesn\'t wind. (I don\'t know if it is overwound) and I don\'t have the weights or pendulum. A bit of the reverse painting has come off the image (see photos), but seems to be easily repainted as it is the background of the image. On the face there are a few chips in the paint and the blue floral decoration on one corner is almost worn away. The other 3 are faint with some wear.

The E. N. Welch Manufacturing Company was a joint stock corporation formed July 6, 1864 to succeed an older private firm making clocks under the name of E. N. Welch. Elisha N. Welch (1809 - 1887) had been making clocks at a factory site on East Main Street at Forestville, Conn. since taking over the bankrupt business of J. C. Brown about 1856.

A new movement shop was fitted up in 1869, adding to the two factories already in use by the firm. Between 1868 and 1884, a subsidiary firm called Welch, Spring & Company was formed to produce a more expensive line of clocks. This firm will be spoken of in more detail elsewhere. The Welch firm was well known for its handsome rosewood cases, though in 1885, with changing styles in furniture, the surviving firm began to introduce new models with solid walnut cases and discontinued some of the older rosewood veneered cases. Please let me know if you need any additional information.
