Beautiful 19thc Victorian Childrens School Sampler Supported by Mrs Thomas, Manuden, June 12th, 1855, in period frame.(I believe this is Manuden in Essex).A really well executed Victorian school sampler in lovely condition, worked by the children of the school, supported by Mrs Thomas. A very old hand written ink note on the reverse which has been kept after conservation of the sampler gives some provenance and reads:
\"ChieflyThis School was supportedby Mr & Mrs Thomas35 yearsMatilda Homer SchoolmistressClosed June 28th 1872\"
A most interesting piece of social history, with great charm and character.It reminds us of the important role that benefactors played to support the education of young children at the time in England. This pretty sampler has rows of different styles of alphabets, border practice and numbers in the top section. A prayer meticulously worked beneath. The lower section has spot motifs, including, flowers in urns, flowers, arrows, crowns, heart, bird, with green below,and is signed:
Work\'d by the Children at the SchoolSupported by Mrs ThomasManuden, June 12th 1855.
All surrounded by a red greek key border.
Colours and condition of thread are very good.Stitches are very fine and meticulously worked. Linen ground is also very good, age toning, a pleasing colour.In original period frame, painted later.Frame is sound. Sampler has been carefully conserved on museum quality conservation mount board slip cased in fresh pure linen. Original hand written note with some provenance returned to back after conservation.Displays very well. Ready to hang and enjoy.It is a really lovely sampler in great condition.
Size:Approx 40 x 44 cms inc frame.
