Saphiretsare one of the most collectable and rare of all stones. Here is a wonderfulpair of large (estimated to be around 3.5 carats / 7 carats total) Saphiretstones, from the early 1900s! The colour is a deeprich brown but when the light shines through them they show the beautiful richblue purple colour!!! (Much nicer in the real light than my photos show!!) Each stone is around 9mm in diameter by 8mm deep and thetotal weight is 3grams. Both are in very good / excellent condition for thereage, please see the images for more detail. It isthought that Saphirets were first made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakiainthe Victorian era c1850 when real gold was added to a sapphire blue / sapphire colouredglass. This mixture resulted in a stone which changes colour through a range ofbrownish purple blues depending on the light. Saphiret (sometimes mis-spelledas saphirite) stones can come as smooth polished cabochons or faceted ones…Mostdesirable!
