Beautiful little extremely rare 1790-5 ADAMS Georgian blue jasperware oil lamp :
$449.99

We are listing this beautiful little extremely rarely seen 1790-1795 Georgian blue jasperware oil lamp (with its very fancy lid) which was made by the famous Adams Pottery. The piece is impressed on its base with the ADAMS mark used by William Adams I from 1789 until his death in 1805. During the late 1700s William Adams produced wonderful stoneware and jasperware pieces which were the equal of anything produced by his contemporaries John Turner and Josiah Wedgwood, and this little piece is a perfect example of that quality and attention to detail. The base of the lamp is made in the form of a simple Roman oil lamp with a small finger hold handle, but it is covered with a beautiful classically themed lid with two exquisitely detailed goddesses in the center and a band of twelve signs of the zodiac around its outer edge. This particular piece (when it was in the Fisk Collection) is pictured on page 111 of ENGLISH DRY-BODIED STONEWARE Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers 1774-1830, dated to 1790-1795 and described as white jasper with dark blue jasper dip with the figure of Flora (the Roman Goddess of flowers and spring) surrounded by the signs of the zodiac. You can also see a picture of a light blue version of the lamp from the Adams Family Collection on page 293 of ADAMS CERAMICS Staffordshire Potters and Pots, 1779-1998. The book mentions an identical light blue piece in the Potteries Museum, and describes the lamp as a light blue jasper taper stand in the form of a Roman lamp and cover, decorated with white applied reliefs of twelve signs of the zodiac surrounding draped figures offering wreathes of victory and flaming hearts, with Pomona (the Roman Goddess of fruitful abundance) in the center. The listed lamp is over 1.5 inches tall, 5 inches long, over 3.25 inches wide, has a wonderful superbly detailed classical lid, makes a very interesting and pretty little display piece, and it is in very good overall condition. The bottom piece of the lamp is lighter in color than the lid (perhaps from use and cleaning?), and the lid has a tiny thin flake out of its top edge and another flake out of its bottom edge, neither of which greatly affect the look of this rare old piece (see the last two pictures). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. An extremely rarely seen and quite beautiful piece of Georgian jasperware typically only seen in a museum.
