The print is folded vertically (now flattened) as are all kuchi-e prints (because of their use), so this is not a negative. The work is a Kuchi-e print by Takeuchi Keishu. He was a disciple of Yoshitoshi. He was an important woodblock printmaker of the Meiji Period. His specialty was kuchi-e prints and erotics prints. We can feel the influence of the tradition in the print. Kuchi-e are woodblock-printed frontispiece illustrations produced for publication in Japanese novels and literary magazines at the turn-of-the-century (1895-1912). This print represents a beauty holding hagoita, a japanese battledore for New year.
