[ofpod]

Perhaps the most influential work of American literature and a cornerstone of 19th century literature.

Thus, true first issues are understandably very hard to come by. In fact, all of the early issues are very difficult to find in good condition. This was one of the most read, pasted along, reread and passed along again books in history, certainly in American literature few other titles even come close.

The first printing was issued in March and consisted of The 5,000 copies. The 3000 copies were sold on the first day of issue, the complete printing was reportedly sold out in a few days. The second printing of 5000 sold out by the end of March. On May 15, 1852 fifty-thousand copies of the first edition were sold. Before the summer was out sales had topped the hundred thousand mark. Until the end of the year 300,000 copies were sold.

An important work whose life began in the limited circulation periodical \'Washington National Era\' weekly. Over the next ten months as reader after reader continued to pass their copies on to others it quickly became a national sensation.

For Harriet Beecher Stowe, the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an evil affront to humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of \"UNCLE TOM\'S CABIN\" on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since.

Stowe presented her story in the style of popular works of the era [melodramatically]--and with religious undertones, but the themes of the novel--the breaking up of families, violence, the naive idea of a return to Africa, and the question of slaves\' agency in this oppression--are historically significant. Stowe had not only witnessed incidents like the ones described in her novel, but \"had long been concerned about slavery, having read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Louis Clark, as well as the abolitionist tracts of L.M. Child and Theodore Weld, and in 1850, when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, she began writing Uncle Tom\'s Cabin.\" [The Fem GT Lit in Eng]. The Fugitive Slave Act, in combination with her book, were arguably the catalysts for the Civil War, as even Lincoln implied upon meeting Stowe.

Book Print TerminologyBack to Top

EDITION:

1. The published form of a literary work.

2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED.

Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition.

PRINTING:

One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing (\"1\" is present in bar-code) or \"A\" or stated \"first printing\").

For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a \"First Edition\".

STATE:

Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value.

ISSUE:

The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing.
