Benn Pitman. The Assassination of President Lincoln andthe Trial of the Conspirators. New York and Cincinnati: Moore, Wilstach & Baldwin, 1865. 421 pages, illustrated; published inhardcover with double columns of print on each page.

This was the “official” text compiled by Benn Pitman, who“invented” his version of shorthand and was responsible for transcribing the militarytrial of the Lincolnconspirators. He then put his notes intoa narrative form.

The book also includes the summations of the attorneys atthe end of the case, as well as an Appendix with Attorney General James Speed’sOpinion of the Constitutional Power ofthe Military to Try and Execute the Assassins of the President. These statements werenotpresent in any other published 1865 versions of thistrial transcript.

This hardcover edition is in the original hardcover boards; somechipping at the top and bottom of the spine, but gold lettering embossed title still quite bright. (please see our photographs). Boldly illustrated front piece of the conspirators (manytimes missing and removed from this book). Also corners bumped andsome foxing with front hinge barely starting. Front blank endpaper has a period handwritten presentation inscription worthy of further research.

But still an excellent example of a very scarce desirable book onthe Lincolnmurder which is more often rebound, or with the spine not present.
