Berg Salts Lot of 15 Silver/Plate Open Salts: Early Gorham, 1916 Silver Rupee:
$61.06

This lot of 15 open salts is from the collection of the late Ed and Kay Berg, two of the most prominent members of the open salt collecting community. The Bergs contributed both to research and knowledge of open salts, through publications including \"Salty Comments\" and \"View from the Salt Box,\" and to thecomradery among salt collectors as founding members of every salt club. The provenance of these salts is supported by a unique sticker applied to each cellar. Approximately 3,000 salts from the Berg Collection will be sold in the coming weeks on , listed by six sellers all identified by the common user name \"Berg Salts\" followed bya number. offer to own them! There\'s !

This lot includes15 salts, the vast majority of which are silver plate. There is at least one sterling, one built around a silver rupee, and one that is pewter. Of particular note:

  • An early Gorham pedestal salt, marked Gorham Manufacturing Company with an anchor. This predates the lion, anchor, G hallmark. According to The Handbook of Gorham Open Salt Dishes, this model number, 020, is c. 1875. The salt shown in the reference has medallions at the rim. This one shows no signs as ever having had them. This salt is in excellent condition and must be very rare.
  • A master boat form pedestal salt with ram\'s heads and Greek key design. Much of the original gold wash remains in the bowl.
  • An unusual salt built around a 1916 silver one rupee coin. The coin alone sells on for more than the opening offer for this entire lot!
  • A sterling pierced work holder with clear glass insert.
  • An interesting pewter salt with cobalt bowl that is not removable.
  • One of the prettiest little silverplate salts I\'ve seen in a while, a simple round bowl on a pedestal formed by three palm leaves which are detailed on both sides.
  • A small salt engraved (I believe) \"Carol,\" which may be signed COIN.
  • And much more!

Overall, these salts are in very nice condition, but do expect the tell tale signs of use.

Please view all photos and ask questions before offerding, as we don\'t want any returns.

Thank you for looking! Enjoy this opportunity to own some true pieces of open salt history! And watch the Berg Salt sellers for more!
