Offered... a masterpiece top quality bolo by the renowned Zuni artist, John Lucio, of a snake dancer kachina (katsina) a ceremonial piece in the Hopi culture, masked and stunning. The work is as good as it gets, with partly flat channel inlay and many carved and raised stones (face mask, arm band, feathers, ankle boots, hem, for example), as well as elaborate stamping on the snake and raindrops. I fell in love with John Lucio\'s picture in Bell\'s book (\"Zuni the Art and the People\") long ago and have included it above. I\'ve also included some pages by Mr. Sei from his book \"Kachinas and Ceremonial Dancers in Zuni Jewelry\" which has pages devoted to this design of John Lucio\'s.  This bolo was an early bolo, made in the 1940s to early 1950s and among his best work ever. The choice of stones is fabulous, with red abalone, multicolor abalone, clean turquoise, jet, cam shell and the work is immaculate, very detailed and powerful. The bolo was given the best hand made tips I\'ve ever seen, very early and gorgeous, with a bulbous ball on the bottom of each long tip, with hand stamping not only on the tips but on the balls, too. They are very valuable, unique and spectacular tips. The leather is also very fine leather and still in good condition.

This piece measures 3-3/8\" tall x 1-3/4\"  wide. It\'s in great wearable, vintage and collectible condition. All wonderful natural stones, some rare to see in a bolo. Elaborately excellent inlay work, too. It is actually hard to distinguish these from similar in the CG Wallace catalog made by Leo Poblano, but this is John Lucio\'s masterful work as artist. There was a time the Zuni did have snake ceremonial dancers but not for a very long time and the Hopi still have them. This is an important ceremonial piece though not currently part of the Zuni Shalako ceremony. It is however, part of the Hopi ceremonials and represented here by the great Zuni artist, John Lucio. This bolo is one of the most gorgeous pieces. It is unsigned and not marked for silver content as is usual for those times. There\'s a trader\'s code on the back, only, The attribution is certain however and the silver is at least coin at.900 or more likely .925 sterling. Hand made wires hold the leather well. Pre-Bennett days, of course. The nice soft leather is about 40-1/2\" end to end with the tips included. There is the finest inlay used here; it\'s breathtaking as is the choice of stones which includes spondylus with beige in it and abalone. There is delicate detail in this work that is very refined and sophisticated. This is one of the finest bolos I\'ve owned. You will adore it when you see it in person. It is museum quality and suitable for the best collections. I commend it highly. Not only is the bolo the best but the tips are unique and very valuable in themselves. This bolo is a \"best example\" and really wonderful!
