It is an Artillery Shell shaped Cigar store counter cigar lighter that is marked on the side: \"Bill Anthony Cigar\" and on the bottom marked: \"Jacob Stohl Jr & Co. NY\" and REMEMBER THE MAINE on back. In the late 1890s Jacob Stohl & Company Cigar makers from New York put out a line of Cigars called \"Bill Anthony\" after a US Soldier who survived the explosion on the USS Maine Battleship, supposedly sunk by the Spanish as it sat in Havana Harbor, igniting the Spanish American War. This Shell shaped Cigar advertising lighter sat on a General Store counter and was given to retail or cigar stores and was used for advertising promotions for the cigars. Here is what I know from searching the internet. (if you want just google: \"Bill Anthony Cigar Lighter\" and very little shows but enough to see about this rare unique promotional cigar counter advertising display)HERE is also what I know. The Glass globe is not original, this used to have a small round globe (they are available on line and on ) I decided not to buy one as they come n various colors and styles between $60 and $150 so that is your choice. I also know the two tubes (holes) on each side of the globe on top were for some sort of wick metal rod that allowed you to take it and place into the lit flame of the center lamp that would allow you to light your cigar. I think they may have been cannon balls or some other type of artillery as the top grips. I was going to make two lead round cannon balls and drill in and add brass rods so that would make it complete and more presentable. There are some dents to the front maybe having been dropped off the store counter over the years but maybe that adds some MOJO? kinda!the artillery shell is 7 1/2\" long 3\" wide. the legs are cast iron cannons (VERY COOL) from table to top of the copper artillery shell is 5\" I did not put in any fluid so I do not know if it leaks. If if does there is an epoxy liquid you can pour in and coat the inside but again I do not know if it leaks and I am not going to put liquid in to find out. This is RARE to say the least. when you search , google etc etc very little comes up. the last one looks to have been sold in 2012 for $6100 with the correct globe but still incomplete. if you are looking for a super collectible military, Tobacco, cigar historical piece of americana advertising, here is it!questions please ask. I will start this at $.01 so everyone has a chance and I dont get called CRAZY with some high priced reserve..... I can assist in making the two wicks as I am a professional jeweler and can make them for a small fee and you can buy a period globe in your choice of color (blue or red would look great with this)
thank you all....
