This is a matted antique illustration from a book of sketches by Edward W. Kemble, Kembles Coons, published in 1896. Kemble is best known for his illustration of Huckleberry Finn. You can read more about this illustrator at the end of this description.

ARTIST: Edward W. Kemble, signed in plateCONDITION: EXCELLENT -- The prints in this series are clear, clean, bright. No foxing, tears or folds. A really fine image. Excellent definition. Nice clean, sharp lines, and wide margins.
This print is about 120 years old and guaranteed to be original. It is an authentic old illustration from the aforementioned book of sketches, and NOT A MODERN REPRODUCTION.

The visible part of the print, including the white border (if any) is about 7 1/2\" x 10 1/4\". Matted the print measures 11\" x 14\". This is a standard size matte that will fit into a standard size frame.

ABOUT EDWARD WINDSOR KEMBLE

Kemble was born in Sacramento, California. In 1875 he wasenrolled at a boarding school in Philadelphia, which was a center of artisticactivity. His artistic talent was such that he was a successful contributor toperiodicals by 1881. He became the major political cartoonist for theNewYork Graphicwhile receiving his only formal artistic training attheArt Students League of New York.

WhenLife Magazinewas founded in 1883, Kemblebecame a frequent contributor to its early issues. He was a staff politicalcartoonist forCollier’sfrom 1903 to 1907, forHarper’s Weeklyfrom1907 to 1912 before returning to Collier\'s, and forLeslie’s WeeklyandJudgeinthe late 1910s.

His lively cartoons, some of the magazine industry\'s mostmature work, attracted the attention of Mark Twain, who employed Kemble toillustrateAdventures of Huckleberry Finn. Kemble subsequently illustratedseveral other famous books, including Twain\'sPuddin Head Wilson,HarrietBeecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Washington Irving’sKnickerbocker History of New York,and many ofJoel Chandler Harris’ Uncle Remus stories.

Kemble isbest remembered for his specialty, cartoons of African Americans. Hischaracterizations were often sympathetic. He took care to study the real urbanand rural environs and living conditions of African Americans, and producedmany sensitive, almost photographic portraits of them.

Kemble lived in theRochelle Parkarea ofsuburbanNew Rochelle.Kemble died inRidgefield, Connecticutin 1933,aged 72.
