Black Forest mantlecuckoo clock

Late 19th century, in beautifully hand carved and polished wood, depicting a fox looking up at a crestedbirdguarding three eggs initsnest, atop a canopy of oak leaves and acorns.

The clock has aone-day movement and strikes on the hour and half hour, when the painted cuckoowith articulated wingsand beak emerges to \'announce\' the time withitsmelodic \'cuckoo\', each accompanied by a chime of the clock\'s gong.Intricately carved bone hands and roman numerals around the clock face, indicate the time.

A snapshot of theclock\'s history is captured on its removable rear cover which has a label onitfromCamerer Cuss & Co. of Oxford Street, London, whichimplies it received their attention around the second world war I would think.

Several of thecarved oak leaves inevitably have tips missing, but these could be repairedeasily enough. The internal mechanism was cleaned andrestored a few yearsago and the cuckoo bellows and flutes replaced; accordingly the clock is inperfect working order complete with key for winding.
