Thisis a spectacular child\'s transfer printed tea set, service for three (Tea forTwo, and a spare), circa 1890. The color of the set is a rich cobalt blue orflow blue on a white ironstone body. Decorated with a fanciful, abstractAesthetic movement design with fans, fish, vignette and geometric whimsies.This design is very striking with a strong japanesque influence capturing theVictorian fascination with the exotic far east.

Theserving pieces are an uncommon round pear shaped, with flower bud finials. Theset consists of:

TEAPOT WITH LID 5 1/2\" tall (spoon dings inside rim)SUGAR WITH LID 4 1/2\" tall

WASTE BOWL 2 1/2\" tall

Three CUPS 2\" tall (1 with tight hairline)

ThreeSAUCERS 4 1/4\" in diameter

ThreeCAKE PLATES 5 3/8\" in diameter (foot chip on 1 plate)

Theset was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in theStaffordshire region of England who was well known for his fanciful children\'stea sets.

Afew of the saucers and plates are marked with pattern number 751 and thepattern name PERSIAN inside a garter cartouche.

Theset is in great condition, as described above. No other chips or cracks. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many peoplecollect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children andprobably considered disposable. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there isrunny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed overedge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksycharm. A great set to display or use -- add it to an existingcollection or buy it as a starter set.
