“Jangada” - Bahia, Northern Brazil

Beautiful impressionist painting of traditional fishing sail boats in Bahia by well-listed Brazilian artist, Reynaldo Manzke (1906 - 1980). Gouache on board. Matted and framed (no glass in place). Signed by the artist, lower right, “Manzke”. Label on the reverse with title and placement of the painting.

Reynaldo Manzke is mostly known for his beautiful landscapes and seascapes of Brazil. This work is a fine example, showing a view of native Brazilian fishermen sailing their Jangadas at great speed on the ocean off the Pacific coast of Brazil. The painting is quite animated and very atmospheric. A true museum quality masterpiece from this well-known artist with great brushwork and colors.

Framed in a restrained Brazilian hardwood frame.

Reinaldo Manzke
(1906 - 1980)

Reynaldo Manzke was a Brazilian painter. Master of landscape and seascape views, he was a great observer of nature and it was his mission to portray the customs, traditions, and diversity of the simple, rural life of the Brazilian people. He immortalized an earlier time leaving future generations a picture of the former Brazil mestizos and native population. Had his early education in the convent St. Anthony in Blumenau, and studied drawing and painting with the master friar, Genésio Hansen. He later perfected his technique by studying in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, painting with oil on canvas and especially the genre of gouache and watercolor.

Manzke traveled throughout Brazil to acquire material for his paintings. He did not use sketches, but retained the images from his travels in his mind, which he would then turn into paintings. Many pictures were also painted outdoors on location, ‘en plein aire’. Mant of his paintings are scenes the southern region of São Paulo and Minas Gerais.

Reynaldo Manzke’s first solo exhibition was in São Paulo in 1939 , repeated in 1945 , 1946, and 1948. He won several awards at the National Salon of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro and from São Paulo government. In 1951 he participated in the first exhibition of the Biennial de São Paulo and was the teacher and advisor of painters like Durval Pereira and Rios Pinto.

Manzke’s paintings can be found in private collections and important galleries in Brazil, Germany, the United States, Canada, France, England, Israel, Italy, Lebanon and the art galleries of Jundiaí and São Carlos . He was a jury member in various official exhibitions in São Paulo, São Bernardo do Campo, Santos, Marilia and Taubaté . Manzke was founder of the Paulista Association of Fine Arts and taught painting from his own studio, in the Praça da Sé, in São Paulo. Also kept a studio in Blumenau, on the, Henry Ave Lallemant Street, which was renamed Reynaldo Manzke Street in his piece will be a museum quality addition to any collection of Latin American Art and will display beautifully in any Mid Century Modern, Eames Era, South American, Tropical, Art Deco, Modernist, Art Nouveau, or Arts and Crafts decor.
