Lovely German Baroque Gilt Wood Carved AngelC 1800***((There is hand-written calligraphy on back, in German; please scroll
through to end of listing to read \"a clue to the angel\'s history...\"))
Beautifully carved. The carving is tactile, with pleasing
symmetry, movement and vibrancy- the inner feathers lookvery ruffly and
tousled, while the outer form is very controlled and balanced.
It is a poetic design. One could say the angel radiates
peace and harmony asthe outer design is very neat, symmetrical
and circular, yet at the angel\'s heart, or center,there isa vibrancy
and energy, perhaps symbolizing her soul.

Gilded with realgold applied over gesso and bole.
Carved from a light-weight finely grained hardwood,likely linden or lime.
it likely once adorned an altar or other religious structure.
As you can see in the photos this angel really shines when brightly lit;
the gilding is ever so lovely. It is real gold, there was no synthetic gold
in the 1800s. Gesso (plaster) and bole(red pigment clay) were applied
over the carved wood toprovide a smooth surface for the gold;
the bolelends the gold a rich red undertone.
Condition-Some age crackling and loss to gilding, as to be expected
with a piece over 200 years old.
Looks wonderful from the front, the back shows some repair.
This is a delicate old piece.The wood is very dry and fragile.

This was likely removed from its mount at some point,
as I see old adhesive residue on the back. Back shows some glue
reinforcement / repairto damage in two spots, a tassel and
the middle swag piece are reattached. Another repair
towing tip islikely original to the time of the carving\'s creation.
The hole and rivet to hangthis may have been added later.
The only repair that is noticed from the front, and then only under
close examination, is tothe left bottom tassle.

On the back, a clue to the angel\'s history: part of a
very old yellowed hand-written page that had been varnished
onto the wood. Sadly it ispretty much worn away by time; the words
are written in black ink, tiny letterspenned in a lovely and
accomplishedcalligraphy. It is written in German. Remarkably,
the only remaining fullword I could make out with my loupe is \"ruhe,\"
which means calm.That is very fitting, don\'t you think?
This lovely angel\'s history has been rubbed away bytime,
yet its \"calm\" and peaceful beauty survives.
There are alsoremnants of old hand-made rag paper on the back of
this. It is thickpaper, you can see the fibers in it, and it is very soft.
Care of Your Antique Angel:
These beautiful old angels always come to us with some damage from the \"kiss\" of time;
the nextcaretaker can help the angel stay beautiful by avoiding direct sunlight and
keeping the display room at a stable temperature with normal
humidity. Of courseyou\'ll want to light up that gorgeous gilding
at times for optimal viewing,after all this angel shines
beautifully when lit, soconsider a safe light source,
with no infrared or ultraviolet waves;
google SoLux bulbs for instance.
