Up for sale is a historic, ANTIQUE photo of a group of Native American Indians in OREGON! This incredible shot has it all! The woman at the left is holding a rifle and wearing tall leather boots and long braids. Two men next to her have a rifle and revolver, one with a fur hat and an elaborately designed sweater! The older man on the horse has his hat tilted to the side and a young animal at his horse’s feet, and the man next to him is wearing a long trench coat. A fabulous shot, and one you don’t often see, of the Indians of the Pacific Northwest! The photo is from c.1890’s and was most likely taken by the famous photographer of the Pacific Northwest, John Fletcher Ford, as it was discovered among other photos of his from his estate!

About photographer John Fletcher Ford (1862-1914):

John Fletcher Ford was a Minnesota-born photographer and evangelist who photographed logging and fishing camps throughout Eastern Oregon and Washington and the lower Columbia river. He became an evangelist early in life while living in Kansas and Iowa, and later settled into the life of a pastor in the Pacific Northwest in 1893 after conducting a revival in Ilwaco, Washington. Ford was an ardent opponent of liquor, and a vigorous proponent of the temperance movement. In addition to his evangelical work, Fort spent much time in the forests, photographically documenting the area’s logging industry. In his obituary, the Columbia River Sun noted that his “collection of logging and fishing views of the lower Columbia river embraced nearly every camp and fishing ground in the district.” He married in 1882 and had 6 children. He died at only 52 years old after suffering from pleurisy.
