This coat was sewn 80 years ago, to the day! Fascinating sartorial time-warp this piece! This is a formal coat of the highest quality of bespoke American manufacture. Made by Wetzel in New York City on December 3, 1934 for H. M. Swift of member of one of Chicago\'s meatpacking families and certainly a member of mid-century high -society. Coat is in flawless condition and the photos really tell that side of story well. The other side of the story concerns Wetzel, Inc. Wetzel was one of America\'s absolute finest merchant tailors. He operated one of the most opulent showrooms in a building at 2 and 4 East 44th St. in Manhattan. The building was an architectural gem, built with luxurious materials. In many respects, this speaks of the well-heeled clientele that walked across his establishment\'s thresh-hold. It was literally one of the great Meccas of American Menswear and his book of business might as well have been the Social Register. Ultimately, in the 1940\'s, this custom tailoring concern moved to digs in the Saks 5th Ave. Men\'s Dept. However, this coat was made well before that. I am told the original owner had this bespoken while as a student at Yale University. The family had a pretty expansive pad on the upper East-Side and that served as a nice place to stay and while doing so, partake in some of the better carriage-trade retailers. Really, this coat is something else. Made of a very heavy cashmere and lined in silk, the lapels are also faced in pure silk satin. This is sort of a special coat, I\'d say. Looks totally off the set of Boardwalk Empire and unlike that show, this may very well have walked down the Boardwalk in 1934.
