This listing is for, without a doubt, the best marble carving that I have had the privilege of owning in my career as an antiques dealer.

This is a very large and impressive, circa 1840, French marble, not alabaster, carving of the Allegory of Night by the renowned French sculptor Jean-Jaques Pradier 1790 to 1852. It measures just under 34 inches high at 86 cm. Besides being beautifully sculptured it is in impeccable unaltered and un-repaired original condition. The white Carrara marble maintains it\'s sheer white color without staining.

The marble shows the beautiful young woman with her hands outstretched partially clothed in a wrap. At her feet is a cherub holding garlands of flowers in his hands. Both sit on a flower strewn base.

The marble is signed on the back "PRADIER". This is for Jean Jaques Pradier 1790 to 1852. Pradier was a Swiss born French artist sculptor best known for his work in the neoclassical style. In his early 20s he won the Prix de Rome. In 1827 he became a member of the Academie de Beaux Arts and a professor at the Ecole de Beaux Arts. He was a friend of most of the romantic poets including Musset, Victor Hugo and Gautier. His Atelier was a center for these luminaries.

His neoclassical sculptures are charged with an eroticism that their mythological scenes can barely disguise. This is certainly the case with this truly wonderful masterwork. Unlike his bronzes, this marble is a one of a kind. Very few of his marble sculptures comes around for sale. a similar figure, which is shown in the last photo below sold at the Paris at public sale house of Catherine Charbonneau on Oct 8th 2009 for 25,000 British pounds or $37,142.Reference page 11 of the catalog. This sculpture is being sold without any reserve.

Please note because of the size and weight 66 pounds, and it\'s relative delicacy shipping will require a wooden crate and very careful packing. So shipping anywhere in the US will be $250. This marble can also be delivered door to door anywhere in NY, Mass, NJ, Conn, Maryland, Eastern Penn and most of the North East. This can be shipped internationally. International buyers please email for a shipping quote before the end of the sale.
