This listing is for 19th century Italian stone micro mosaic miniature double picture frame on stand. The mosaic pattern is done in small flowers around two oval frames. At the top is a mosaic clover leaf. The colors are strong and vibrant.
The frame measures 1 11/16" across and stands 2" high. The opening in the center of the frame for the photograph measures 1" by 7/8". The detail work is exquisite.
Micro mosaics are a special form of the mosaic arts that utilize unusually small mosaic components to craft what often are extraordinarily complex and detailed patterns or images. Examples of finely crafted micro mosaics dating back to the 3rd century BC are known to exist, although the apex of their popularity was the mid-19th century. Early handcrafted examples of micro mosaics are primarily Italian.
