COLORADO RIVERPOTHOLES

At the Eastern end of Laguna Dam, about ten miles northeast of Yuma, are the Arizona Potholes, where masses of black schist and coarse, granitic gneiss rise steeply for 250 feet above the Colorado River.Erosion of quartz veins in these rocks producedcoarse placer gold. Countless millenia before our present time, this gold had settled into the region\'s ravines. Eventually, after more erosion, these remnant channels, bits and pieces from older drainages, became elevated and now can be found resting atop granite, rhyolite, gneiss, and schist bedrock here in this geological contact zone. While I prospected this area, a smattering of gold could be found by reprocessing old drywasher tailings. No one ever struck it rich here though a few old-timers might have made subsistence wages (i.e. fifty cents a day).

Still on the Arizona side, but further south, traveling to the far end of the Laguna Mountains and crossing the Gila River floodplain, you will encounter thenorth end of theGila Mountains. Driving a few miles up a gravel road will land you near the old ghost town of Gila City, site of an 1800s gold rush. Promising recreational- prospecting opportunities still exist around this mining district.

North of both the Gila mountains and the Laguna mountains across the Colorado River lie the California Potholes where, many years ago, rich placers were encountered and worked. Not far from these diggings, to the West, are the Cargo Muchacho Mountains where washes in the vicinity of the old ghost town of Tumco continue to be producers of placer gold. Somewhat in-between these two districts and further north lies Picacho Peak, another famous old mining district where considerable gold mining has occurred in recent years.

These localmining districts offer interesting playgrounds in the Yuma areafor the novice mining aficionado. Researching a little deeper will disclose many more gold districts throughout this portion of the Arizona and California deserts. Although you arerarely, if ever, assured of finding gold, your chancesare still pretty fair in the old wild west.

It isalways advisable to investigate the claim statusof land inmining districts open to mineral entry. When you see old mine workings and such, there\'s a very good chance the land is under claim, inside the military proving grounds, or on one of the Colorado River Indian Reservations. The Yuma county B.L.M. office is the place to find mining claim status as well asinformation on lands open to mineral entry in Arizona. One possible shortcutwhich might helpavoid much of the run around connected with finding a place to workis to join a gold-mining club with valid claims.

Thanks forchecking out our digs.
