Carl Rawson was born in Van Meter, Iowa, in 1884 but was actually raised in Des Moines, Iowa. As a young boy, Rawson took art lessons in Iowa. He also studied at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines and later in his life he studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and National Academy of Design in New York. Rawson’s overall formal art education was very extensive.

In 1906, at the age of 24, Rawson moved to Minneapolis work as a cartoonist for the Minneapolis Tribune. The same year he married a fellow artists, Lowell Pattee. In 1915, Rawson left his job as a cartoonist with the Minneapolis Tribune to become a full time portrait artist. Many of Rawson’s portraits were of both local and national political and influential patrons. In his spare time, he painted landscapes mostly of Minnesota but later on of Arkansas, New York and Texas. He loved to paint in the outdoors. Most of his landscapes in Minnesota are of the North Shore near Beaver bBay where Rawson had a cabin and of the Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota. He also painted many landscapes of Minneapolis, the City of Lakes, especially Lake of the Isles. Rawson made a great living as a portrait and landscape artist. He bought a home at 634 Kenwood located in a prestigious neighborhood in Minneapolis.

Carl Rawson loved the outdoors and enjoyed all sports, but especially golf and baseball. Carl Rawson’s works can be found in many private and public collections through the United States, including the Capitol Building in Bismarck, North Dakota, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,Massachusetts.
