Part of a exquisite collection of Tribal Art that I will be listing over the next two weeks from a collector who specialized in this and Native American 19th century beadwork. This piece is a Bilum or Suspension Hook from the Middle Sepik River Region in Northern New Guinea (Bilum hooks were found in both dwellings and cult houses and were used to suspend various vessels and other objects out of the reach of rodents, dogs, and small children. In the past, skull trophies were also hung from them). Measures about 28 1/2\" X 8\". Hand carved \"garamut\" hardwood hook with classic a Sepik motif on both sides---inset cowrie shell eyes and two birds on the sides. Flash pictures DO NOT do justice to the wonderful patina of these pieces!! Carved wood ancestral bowls and other articles made prior to December 1960 are now restricted---considered to be National Cultural Property---and cannot leave the island.
