Original Civil War era CDV of William Barker Cushing. Cushing was an officer in the US Navy who led the daring nighttime raid of the Confederate ironclad CSS Albemarle, resulting in it\'s sinking. Born in Wisconsin and raised in Fredonia, New York, Cushing was expelled from the US Naval Academy. At the outbreak of the Civil War, US Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles reinstated him after Cushing personally pled his own case. He went on to acquire a distinguished record, frequently volunteering for the most hazardous missions. Cushing\'s daring plan and successful execution against the Confederacy\'s ironclad ram CSS Albemarle defined his military career. Two of Cushing\'s brothers died in uniform, one (Alonzo) in the Battle of Gettysburg for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Identified in period ink on the back. The photographer\'s backmark is Brady.General wear and minor staining, with slightly roundedcorners. The overall color of the photo and mount has faded to a light brown. Two small pinholes, one near the top of the photo and one near the bottom, which are also evident on the back. A small surface mark just to the left of Cushing\'s head. Some light corner creasing.
