ABOUT CHIKANOBU
(1838-1912)Chikanobu was born in Niigata Prefecture as Hashimoto Tadayoshi, and trained in Kano School painting. He studied woodblock design under Kuniyoshi and Kunisada, and finally with Toyohara Kunichika (all of the Utagawa school). He received his artist’s name from Kunichika.

Although he was publishing woodblock prints as early as the 1860s, Chikanobu made his artistic reputation in the 1880’s with triptychs illustrating political events of the Meiji period, depictions of the Imperial family, and customs and manners of a changing Japan; particularly historical and mythological legends and histories from Japan\'s past and genre scenes with women and children. The percentage of triptychs among the prints created by the artist is higher than by any other artist of the Meiji period.
