CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE CANTEEN Capt. F. Bass 1st Texas Infantry Hood\'s Brigade:
$1295.95

Parting with the canteen shown. Purchased for me and has been in my possession for almost eight years. At the time of purchase, it was described as follows:

\"Confederate canteen id\'d to Capt. Frederick Samuel Bass, Co. K. 1st Texas Infantry. Bass graduated from Virginia Military Institute and raised a company called the Marshall Guards. He was promoted to Major the 18th of October 1862 and was a Captain for Co. K 17th Regt. Texas Calvary Clough Rangers. He was wounded the 7th of October 1864 and was also Colonel of Co. E 1st Texas Infantry Hood\'s Bde. He was paroled at Appomattox and at the time was a Brevet Maj. General. The canteen of shallow tin. round in form with cork and metal stopper covered with a layer of bed ticking and then an outer layer of burlap, on the exterior on which is stenciled on one side Capt. Bass and on the reverse 1st Texas. Size 7\" diameter. Folder with matching research on Capt. Bass included. Burlap has various stains, some old re-stitching on the seams, and on one side a couple of holes in the burlap through to the bed ticking about the size of a thumb. (4-5077 (8,500-10,500)\".

Since I obtained, the two holes have become one, about the total size of four thumbs or two fingers. All I have done to the item is stored it in a cabinet.

The item was advertised as part of the John J. Hayes Historical Collection. The canteen was tagged, \"Canteen with cover marked 1st Texas Capt. Bass from John Hayes noted collector who obtained it and the information from descendents\". I have left the tag on the canteen.

In 2012, I emailed Mr. Hayes regarding the canteen. His response was as follows: \"Yes, I remember the canteen. Actually, it was found in Long Island NY about 40 years ago. Your right about the paperwork coming off the Internet as that\'s where I got it. when I originally got the canteen I had no idea who he was. The canteen is 100% correct\". At the time, Mr. Hayes still had Capt. Bass\' original rig and pistol.

Captain Frederick Samuel Bass was born about 1857 in Virginia and came to Marshall Texas in 1857. He was admitted to the Confederate Home in Austin in 1894 with loss of sight and passed in 1897. What ever information was included in the notebook obtained at the time, I will forward as well. It is mostly Internet information.

A rare museum quality item. If I can be of any other assistance, do not hesitate to ask.
