CIVIL WAR Prisoner of War Cover from JOHNSON\'S ISLAND, Union Prison for Confederate Officers, captured during the American Civil War. A faint black cds APR 29, 1865? Very faint State Postmark with BRIDGEPORT could be CONNECTICUT, MISSOURI OR MISSISSIPPI. Since Lamkin was from a Mississippi Unit the Bridgeport postmark is likely from Mississippi. CDS and Target Cancel both tie Scott 65. However, there are no other markings or required postage to make it of Confederate origin.
Examined markings are 3 of Type I Oval Black Handstamps on the reverse of PRISONER\'S LETTER JOHNSONS ISLAND with replaceable initials B. F. M. which identifies the Examiner as Benjamin F. Miller. Mr. Miller was an Examiner from April 26 thru May 5, 1865. Therefore, the faint Bridgeport cds is likely to be April 29, 1865.
Letter is addressed to John S. Lamkin, Johnson Island, Sandusky, Ohio. Johnson Island was and is an island off shore from Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Erie. Mr. Lamkin was a Captain in the Mississippi Infantry Division. He was captured by Union forces at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek. Georgia. He survived Prison life and was released in 1865. After the war Lamkin wrote articles and books about the time and life in prison.
