An original Civil War Letter from Private Matthias Bittman at \"HQ Sumners Corp Sedgwicks Division Gormans Brigade 2nd Regt NY, Camp Winfield Scott Near Yorktown, Va \" to a friend; , today the rebs ambushed his squad in the trenches, he dropped on seeing musket smoke as the ball takes 4 seconds to arrive, a trick he learned at Bull Run, a rebel shell wounded 2 of us, but in every fight we cheer like lions to make the Secesh mad & show the we are in good spirits. 4pp, last sheet separate, all w age stains, edge wear, overall Good. The letter\'s end notes the date, April 29, 1862. With service info- Bittman served 4 years w the 82nd & 59th NY, was wounded at Savage Station, Captured & paroled at the Weldon Railroad & promoted to Sgt.
This is the first Civil War letter I have seen describing a soldier judging the difference between the appearance of musketry smoke and the arrival of the musket ball.
