The shaft is covered with a metal brass sleeve, which moves up and down to turn light on/off.

How pole switch works:It\'s somewhat of a hidden feature that you have to know about or you would never try it. You actually grip the center pole firmly, then push down about a quarter of an inch, then it springs back and it turns the socket on or off as you push the pole down. It\'s a very convenient feature because you can choose low medium or high wattage and go directly to your favorite setting without turning the finger knob on the socket.)

The brass finish shines beautifully from top to bottom, with some minor blemishes on base-as shown.

This lamp measures 50\" tall to the top of the finial. It sets firmly in place on a heavy weighted 10\" diameter base.
