1880 autograph letter signed (ALS), of Basil W. Duke, (signed \"B.W. Duke\") - Confederate General, dated at Louisville, Kentucky, Jan. 1, 1880, on U.S. Postal Card (#UX5), addressed to Judge William Lindsay, at Frankfort, Ky.

Postal card has black \"LOUISVILLE/KY.\" postmark, dated Jan. 1st.

A scarce autograph letter signed of BASIL W. DUKE, (1838-1916), who rode with his brother-in-law, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan (Morgan\'s Raiders), during the Civil War, and was his second-in-command. Was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh; Duke was taken prisoner during Morgan\'s Raid in Ohio, on July 19, 1863, and exchanged on Aug. 3, 1864. AfterMorgan was killed on Sept. 4, 1864, Duke assumed command of Morgan\'s forces, and was promoted to Brigadier General on Sept. 15, 1864. At the end of the war, was among President Jefferson Davis\'s bodyguard during his flight from Richmond through the Carolinas. After the war, he moved to Louisville, KY, in 1868, where he practiced law. Helped found Louisville\'s Filson Club in 1884, and wrote 3 books, including \"History of Morgan\'s Cavalry\", and \"Reminiscences of Basil W. Duke\".

The letter is written on a postal card with printed letterhead of \"LAW OFFICES OF DUKE & RICHARD\", and is dated at Louisville, KY, Jan. 1, 1880, and reads:

\"Genl. Hardin will be in Court on Monday to withdraw motion to dismiss appeals for Commonwealth. Have your Comp\'y represented by yourself or some one to make similar motion.

B.W. Duke\"
