A TRULY TRIBAL and EARLY ANTIQUE TEKKE TURKOMAN MAIN CARPET, Central Asian Tribal, Turkmenistan, 3rd quarter of the 19th Century (perhaps earlier?), and coming in very good overall original condition for the collector or decorator. The size is: 7\'-2\" x 10\'-4\" (218 x 315 cm). A beautiful and early antique specimen of a Tekke main carpet possessing soft and silky top quality wool and all natural dyes derived from plant sources with unusual light blues and blue-greens. Out in the sun light, this weaving literally glows to the eye. The carpet isasymmetricallyknotted with 180 knots per square inch on finely spun natural ivory wool for the warps and finely spun natural medium brown wool for the wefts. The quality of material and fineness of weave structure give this carpet a supple, blanket-like, handle to it in the hand. This fine weaving possesses its original side cord over-castings and the original top and bottom endings, now sewn secure to prevent any future loss of structure. The pile is velvety to the touch. The carpet has mostly allover good pile condition, but there area areas of lower, but not worn out, pile, mostly along the left border and there are two small burns on the bottom pane (see all photos). One of the many unusual features present on this early main carpet specimen is the secondary gul which also appears on some main carpets of the Salor and on smaller weavings of the Tekke and other Turkmen tribes as either the secondary or as the main motif. Also note that the weaver started out using halved \"gurbaka\"\" gols on the very bottom of the field and then changed to the \"chuval-gul\". The delicate rectangular lattice which runs through the main guls istypicalfor early Tekke carpets. Note that the minor guls are connected on the vertical axis by fine lines and two small rhombs between each minor gul and that many unusual chevron and geometric grids separate the \"shelpe-guls\" on the left and right side main borders. Also note that the elem panels at both ends are pile woven rather than having a plain weave kilim end finish as usually found on Tekke main tent carpets. Azadi states that this is a feature found on wedding carpets. Although the weaving is clean and collection ready, it could use a stretching to size it morerectilinearif designated for use as a decorative floor covering as it is strong and sturdy for floor use with a high quality pad placed underneath. If you have any questions concerning this very beautiful and quite early antique Tekke Turkmen tribal weaving, email Michael Phillips or feel free to call my studiophone at: (303) 885-7599.
