No. 17 from Juxtaposed Pictures of Twenty-Four Paragons of Filial Piety (based upon Chinese scholar Guo Jujing, pertaining to devotion of children to their parents and other relatives)

This sale is for an original 1800s Japanese woodblock print by Chikanobu. The print is framed and the old kraft backing paper contains a couple of labels. One is from Jack Simmerling\'s Heritage Gallery on 103rd Street in Chicago, Illinois. The other indicates that the print is a guaranteed original Chikanobu woodblock print, circa 1890, by T. Sakai, established in 1874 in Tokyo. The piece measures 13 3/4 x 9 9/16 inches, with a framed size of 21 x 15 3/8 inches.

CONDITION: The print looks to be tipped in at the corners and not laid down. There are light creases throughout which were difficult to capture in the images. The most prominent is a cluster of light creases that is horizontal, from the tree to the empty sky above the figures in the upper left corner. Other handling creases in the corners, light soiling, and a bit of adhesive stain in the upper corners from the adhesive used to attach the print to the backing paper. We try to be thorough in describing defects and it is not perfect, but it is a very presentable example with very nice colors. The faux bamboo painted wood frame has scattered rubbing and wear.
