Description

This is a vintage Waterman\'s C/F (cartridge filler) Black Fountain Penwith a very smooth writing Stainlessnib. It was introduced in 1953, and was the first widely successful cartridge filling pen. BTW, Waterman doesn\'t make the cartridges anymore and it is a unique size. An original emptyone is included with this pen and fits the pen perfectly.I have had excellent success refilling the cartridges. Iuse an industrialsyringe (flat needle tip) or something similar will also work. I\'ve reused cartridges up to 25 times and have never had one leak. The end of the inside of the barrel presses against the cartridge keeping it tight and leak free. \'New\' ones show up on from time to time, but remember that ink WILL evaporate from the cartridge over time. Even if the cartridge is advertised as New Old Stock, chances are in may only contain a tiny bit of dried ink. Also, here is a link to an English company that sells Waterman CF Converters – about $30.00.Waterman also made a converter for theWaterman Lady and it will fit the CF if youcan find one.

The high priced models were notorious for corrosion of the plated trim apron that is inlaid into the section surrounding the nib, drastically reducing their value. Inks back then were very acidic. Today, they are nicely Ph. balanced. With a 10X loupe I can\'t see any evidence of corrosion at all. The CF forever changed the way people thought about fountain pens. The very simple to use drop-in disposable ink cartridges were a hit. Although Waterman was not the first to market with a CF (Cartridge Filler) pen (LUS Atomica beat themby about a year - Italian made), Waterman had an established world-wide distribution system and global clout, while Atomica was a small regional Italian company. The Atomica pen was actually quite well made - an excellent pen and manythousands were sold. The CF pen was designed by an automotive designer and was probably quite a few years ahead ofits time.Waterman\'s USA manufacturing facilityclosed down in 1957. Jif-Waterman in France continued to produce different CF models. To attract new buyers Lacquered models were introduced. Therewere also models made out of Sterling Silver, Solid Gold and Gold Plating. The CF model stayed in production for about 30 years. Its styling legacy lives on in its bifurcated clip (divided into two branches - my new favorite word). The trim on the clip is also Stainless Steel. The clip looks really good and is nice and tight on the cap. The end of the cap has the Waterman globe. It looks like a gold color around the globe, but it is just the lighting. It is SS just like the rest of the cap.The brushed SScap on this pen looks spotless. I don\'t see any nicks or dents at all It could pass for new.The penbodylooks excellent - just the typical use scratches from year of writing.I took the pen apart and ultrasonically cleaned all of the components. As mentioned earlier, the nib is SS and is about a \'MF\' point. It is a smooth writer and is very stiff. The cap edge is imprinted \'WATERMAN\'S\' and \'MADE IN U.S.A.\'Oh, almost forgot -overall length of the pen cappedis right at 51/4inchesand about 5 3/4inches with the cap posted. The cap posts easily and securely making this pen a very comfortable length. I would classify this as a very slenderpen in girth but it is certainly a full length pen capped, uncapped or posted.

This is a very nice example of a Waterman\'s CF fountain pen from the 1950\'s. It went out of productionwhenthe plant was closed in 1957. The pen was still quite popular in Europe and enjoyed many years of production by Waterman\'s French facility. It was so popular that the French kept the interest up by introducingnew colors and new patterns. This pen would make a really great daily writer or a nice addition to your collection. I\'m not sure how to date this pen, bit it was probably made before1957.
