TYLOSAURUS PEMBINENSIS

(THIRD COIN IN RCM\'SEXTREMELY POPULAR GLOW-IN-DARK SERIES)

This unique paintedcupronickel coin has a diameter of 35mm and includes unusual photo-luminescentfeature. Designed by artist Julius Csotonyi, with the technical guidance ofpaleontologists at Alberta’s Royal Tyrell Museum, the reverse side of this paintedcoin illustrates paleontologists’ rendition of what Tylosaurus probably lookedlike.

Centered within araised circular frame, the amazing pterosaur’s head, dominated by anexceptionally long open beak, is viewed from its right side. The huge mouth isopen to reveal dozens of sharp, powerful teeth. Its head sits atop a long, stiff neck leading to a powerful chest and shoulders, long legs and its massivefolded, bat-like wings.

When the coin isremoved from natural light, the skeleton upon which paleontologists have basedtheir illustration appears. Although sunlight is best, the fluorescent andincandescent lights found in most households can also be used to activate thespecial photo-luminescent ink that makes the bones of the dinosaur glow. Forbest results, place the coin in these light sources for 30–60 seconds thenbring it into the dark to reveal the skeleton of the dinosaur. In theglow-in-the-dark image, the huge flying beast is transformed into a delicateskeleton with its seemingly endless sinuous spine, complex rib structure,finger-like flipper bones, and bony tail revealed in stunning detail, renderingthe large beast light enough to remain airborne.

Theframe surrounding the image features the embossed word \'CANADA,\' the date\'2013,\' and the face value of \'25 CENTS.\' The obverse features the effigy ofHer Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Tylosaurus isa super-predator related to present day snakes and Komodo dragons. It was oneof the most massive creatures ever to inhabit Earth’s oceans. The firstspecimens of Tylosaurus were discovered by American paleontologistsEdward D. Cope and Othniel C. Marsh in the 1860s and 1870s in Kansas. A centurylater, paleontologists in Manitoba unearthed the fossil of a colossal 80million year old Tylosaurus-like animal - the largest ever found inCanada. In 1988, vertebrate paleontologist Dr. Elizabeth Nicholls of Alberta’sRoyal Tyrell Museum named the creature Hainosaurus pembinensis (nowrenamed Tylosaurus pembinensis) for the Manitoba rock formation in whichit was discovered. This Canadian Tylosaurus, who became known around theworld as “Bruce,” was approximately43 feet (13 meters) long.Excavators were able to uncover about 70% of its original bones, making for arelatively complete skeleton. Tylosaurus “Bruce” pembinensis nowresides at the Canadian Fossil Discovery Center in Morden, Manitoba.
