He was appointedbishop of Mantua in 1884 and Patriarch of Venice in 1894. When he was electedPope, he begun a codification of Canon law, set up a commission to revise the Vulgata, reorganized the Papal court and ordered a revision of the breviary. He urged frequent reception of the Holy Communion, especially by children, and told Catholics to become more actively involved in politics. He denounced the heresy of modernism, demanding an oath against it by every single priest. By every means, he tried to prevent the outbreak of WW 1 and died when he realized it was impossible to stop this outbreak of collective madness. When the Austrian Emperor asked him to bless his Army, he had the courage to reply: \"I only bless the Peace\". Shortly after, he died, as poor as he was born, under the impression of the tragedy of War. He was canonized in 1954 by Pope Pius XII.
