Item:This is an elegant example of a Celery Vase...a \'must have\' on the fashionable dining tables of the English upper and middle classes in the 19th Century.Background: Celery was an expensive luxury during this period and the celery stems, still with their leaves, were proudly presented to diners in these specially designed glass vases, part filled with water to keep the celery fresh.Date: The polished pontil on the flat base indicates that this was a blown glass vase rather than a cheaper moulded version produced in quantities in the mid/late Victorian period. The shape of the pedestal and the simple unadorned fluted shape suggests late Georgian or it could be very early Victorian...hence a suggested date of c.1830/40.Dimensions (approx):
