Canton enamel, Chinesepainted enamel,so named for the principal place of itsmanufacture,Canton. Painted-enameltechniques were originally developedinLimoges, Fr., from about 1470.These techniques were introduced intoChina in the 18th century, probably byFrench missionaries. This is reflected inthe translation of the Chinese term forpainted enamels, “foreign porcelain.”A metal object, usually copper butsometimes silver or gold, is coveredwith a background layer ofenamel(often white), is fired, and then ispainted with coloured enamels much asare porcelains. The finished piece isthen fired again.
