RARE CHINESE EXPORT SILVER FLORAL GARLAND AND TASSLE ROSEWATER SPRINKLER; FRENCH IPORT MARKS; 19 OUNCES
We are quite pleased to offer this unusually large beautifully crafted late 19th century rosewater sprinkler. Bearing French import marks. We believe it is Chinese. Made for the French market. Though given the Japanese influence in the raised chrysanthemum, we cannot totally rule out Meiji origin. Briefly, sprinklers date back centurie in the Muslim world. Often placed at the entryway for visitors to refresh themselves before entering. Mid-19th century Victorian tables included sprinklers, the precurrsors to finger bowls. Classic long tapering detachable neck, to bulbous lower resevoir. Delicate chrysanthemum and streaming vine garland. Suspended from oval stay with tassle. Series of French inspired streaming leaf tip borders. The tapering neck with leafy streams set within beaded frame. Elaborate beaded centre globe and urn, supporting pierced egg shape finial. This rare Chinese silver rosewater sprinker for the French market is 15 1/4 inches. Thick heavy guage solid silver construction it weighs 19 1/2 standard ounces. Signed with series of six 1838 to present French swan marks. Excellent condition. Rich lusterous silver patina. The floral garland and leaf tip decoration retains most all of its detail. Neck unscrews tightly for filling. Tiny shallow bumps along base edge For the discerning collector of the finest Chinese export silver.
