Chinese antque late Ming - Qing Dynasty carved wooden entrance doors - 17th-18th centuryMagnificent and extremely rare giant doors, 9 feet tall - probably from a palace, temple or rich merchant\'s home
Description:Fresh from a multi-million dollar midtown Manhattan estate come this spectacular pair of extremely old, rare and magnificently carved doors. These in all likelihood date from the late Ming to mid-QingDynasties, circa 17th-18th century. Each door features fine lattice work flanked top and bottom by elaborate carving: at top is a carved panel offoliatescrolling tendrils, very muchin the Ming manner. The middle of each door features four superbly carved robed Ming figures cavorting in a naturalistic setting. The figures are flanked by a relief lattice carving that echoes the elaborate lattice of the doors, the right angles of which are interspersed with floral sprics, and which surround a central cartouche, containing a beautifully carved mythological figure (one door is female, the other male). Throughout, the quality of the carving is nothing short of astonishing.
Each door has remnants of extremely old and well-oxidized iron hardware. The current brass ring pulls are consistent with early19th century hardware; judging by the rusted hand-forged iron loops theyreplaced, the current pulls were likely added when the doors were
at least 100 years old.The doors are in fine, stable condition, and are very much intact. The wood appears to be a mix of cypress and nanmu,a wood used extensively during the Ming Dynasty in architecture and ship-building. I have not weighed them, but have hefted them, and would estimate that they weigh at the minimum 60 pounds each.Nothing is missing with the exception of a couple of inches worth of lattice. The doors are constructed in the traditional mortise and tenon style, with no use of nails or screws.
