Rosie\'s EmporiumAntiques and vintage.
Shrewsbury, England.Description:This item is a pair of Antique Chinese embroidered sleeves. They are sewn using Peking knots (or Forofferden stitch) and couched metallic and white thread. The ground is ivory coloured silk. The motifs are peonies, vessels, pomegranates and lotus leaves and flowers- they are very fine and unusual. The metallic thread is couched with beige thread- it was popular to use red thread to couch the metallic thread after about 1870- so I think that these pre-date 1870. It is generally sited that the Forofferden stitch was only used for the court dress in The Forofferden city- I am not certain how accurate this is, however, it is a romantic idea and these sleeves are certainly of high quality. The embroideries are framed, this has kept them in lovely condition- however, the frame is not special and I am happy to take the embroideries out to post if the buyer requests. The postal quote is for the framed item.
Condition:The condition is very good- on close inspection there are a few loose threads, these are only noticeable when the piece is scrutinised.
Measurements:The framed sleeves measure 19.5 cm in width and 51.4 cm in length.
