Up for sale is a magnificent handwritten travel diaryfilled with ephemera and real photos circa 1927. The diary belonged to a youngwoman by the name of Rose Dauahey,it was presented to her right before her trip to ParisLondon and Ireland. She boarded the ship in N.Y. on the S.S. Tuscanca. She musthave been quite the debutante she was on First Class all the way across theAtlantic. She was on ship from Sept 8th till Oct 18th herreturn trip was abroad the S.S. Lancastria out of Southhampton.

She wrote someinsightful and detailed entries 60 pages of entries with approximately 20 pagesof associated ephemera foldout map, and notes. There is writing on both sidesof the paper along with notations in the margins Included are two greatoriginal photos. One interesting shot of her friend and two gentlemen ,the inscription on the rear of thephoto reads \"Alice L Downey and friends on board Tuscania enroute to Europetaken on the hurricane deck by Rose Dauahey 1927 The young man with Alice isPaul Didier Jr. son of Paul Didier ambassador to France in 1927.\"

The other photo is also interesting it shows three youngwomen in 1920’s attire with the caption \"Alice Downey Ella Fudidley and RoseDauahey at Queenstown (now Colb) Ireland Oct 10, 1927 waiting for ship Lancastriafor America.\"

The rear of the diary has many hotel tags and other paperpasted into the pages.

Sept 8th

Promenaded deck and looked over boat and got places fordinner at table with Dr Downey and Marion Fleenor and Jean Downey sat on topdeck and listened to band concert took pictures of Dr Downey and bride.

Sept 13th

Mrs. Downey Marion and Bailey Meg and I laughing and jokingand taking pictures Doc left us and got signatures of Capt Smart and had talk withhim PM show on “A” aft dinner room talent on ship better than anything seen onVaudeville stage in a long time. After show Alice Downey joined us and we allrepaired to salon where we have something to eat and some red wine and thanwatched the dressed up drunks for a while and than 3 bells all went below.

Sept 15th did not sleep much last night as thesea was rough it wakened us and I felt

A bit squeamish today for the first time. Dressed hurriedlyand got up on deck and wrote my diary and took a walk in the air. Just now theold boat is rocking so I cannot write.

Tonight with be the masquerade and tomorrow preparing toleave the boat on Sat this morning Scotty the steward told is we were now offthe Irish coast I can hardly believe that we have gone so far almost there now.

Sept 16th Arose at 12 noon today and weatherclearing up Sea subsided considerable. Land will soon be in sight and than wewill know how Christopher Columbus really felt.Docking at Havre Port at about 2; 30 on Sat Am was receivedby the President of France (Paris) and military band playing La Marseille andStar Spangled Banner.

Sept 21

in the evening went to see the Follies Berger and itwas so vulgar and tiresome that we left early before the show was over .Arose early went shopping with Jean and Marion as will betheir last day before leaving Paris Met Doc at 7 pm at Grand Hotel and we allwent to Sam’s Café for supper and than to the ball held by the CaliforniaLegion until 1 pm and took a taxi home Marion and I partaking of Chocolate inthe street stall before going to bed.

SeptTo London via air plane I arose early got breakfast and took train to theStrand which is the heart of London saw the Kings Guard out again to see theslums of London by night with a party of Americans and guide Went thru tubesunder the Thames tot he Linehouse Dist to the Chinese joints and down to thedocks to Charley’s place a sailors rendezvous and dance hall filed withtrophies from all parts of the world. The London Bobby’s guarded the doors whenwe entered and stayed there until we came out.
