Artoria Gibbons was born in Wisconsin as Anna Mae Burlingston. While working as a domestic servant in Spokane, Washington she met the tattoo artist Charles “Red” Gibbons. They married in Spokane in 1912 and had one daughter. Years into their marriage, the couple decided they would be able to make a better living if Anna became a performing tattooed lady. Tattooed women and men have been a crucial aspect of the American sideshow. Charles tattooed Anna in full color. Anna was a deeply religious woman and was tattooed with images of angels, saints as well as patriotic images, including that of George Washington. Thus, Anna started working as ‘Artoria’ in the sideshow while her husband tattooed customers. Artoria died at age 91 and had been performing in sideshows as a tattooed lady for more than 50 years.
