1862 Civil War cdv LIEUTENANT GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT (1786-1866) by Charles D. Fredricks

This is an original 1862 carte-de-visite (cdv) albumen photograph of Lieutenant General Winfield Scott by well known photographer Charles D. Fredricks of New York City. The sharp and clear vintage photograph shows a seated and stern-looking General Scott in his dress uniform with sword and epaulets.

According to Wikipedia (this same image is used as their lead photo):

[Scott] was a United States Army general and unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig Party in 1852.

Known as \"Old Fuss and Feathers\" and the \"Grand Old Man of the Army,\" he served on active duty as a general longer than any other person in American history, and many historians rate him the best American commander of his time. Over the course of his 53-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican–American War, the Second Seminole War, and, briefly, the American Civil War, conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other holder of the office.

A national hero after the Mexican–American War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, to nominate Scott in that year\'s United States presidential election. At six feet five inches tall, he remains the tallest man ever nominated by a major party. Scott lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1855 to the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American since George Washington to hold that rank.

The cdv has Scott\'s name and rank printed on the front along with Fredrick\'s copyright information. The verso of the cdv says the photo was made at West Point on June 10th, 1862 and goes on to say, \"The subscribers claim that, for correctness of portraiture, finish and detail, it is pre-eminently the best portrait of the Great American Military Chieftain.\"

The 2½\" x 4\" cdv is in excellent condition with good contrast and only some minor spotting on the surface (see photos)..

SHIPPING: Domestic shipping is $7.00 via USPS First Class Mail Parcel or $10.50 via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation.

The shipping fee also includes postal insurance plus the additional fees imposed by and PayPal on the shipping charges, which amounts to an additional 15% on top of the fees charged by the post office. Shipping discounts are available for multiple purchases shipped to the same address in the same box.

International buyers please note: The shipping charges you pay when purchasing this item do not include import duties, taxes, broker\'s fees, or other charges that may be imposed by government officials or Customs brokers in your country. Please check your country\'s import regulations if you want to be informed about any additional charges that may be imposed on your package when it arrives.

PAYPAL PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Visa and MasterCard are accepted through PayPal for domestic purchases. For international purchases, because of PayPal and \'s very strict rules regarding proof-of-shipment for sellers, if you want to pay for the item using PayPal, and the item sells for less than $750.00, I can only accept a PayPal payment if you are willing to pay for USPS Priority Mail Express International or Priority Mail International shipping. They are the only on-line-trackable shipping methods offered by our US Postal System to international destinations, and an on-line-trackable shipping method is a PayPal and requirement. If the item sells for more than $750.00, then Priority Mail Express International is the ONLY shipping option available because it is the only service that requires a signature upon delivery. PayPal and both require signature confirmation on packages worth more than $750.00.

Additionally (for both domestic and international purchasers), if you pay for the item using PayPal, there are two Priority Mail services I cannot offer, their Flat-Rate Envelope and Small Flat-Rate Box. Neither of these two services are trackable (or insurable), and they are therefore against PayPal and \'s rules.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: has made changes to their payment rules whereby (in \'s own words) \"Beginning in late October [2008], sellers will no longer be allowed to offer [any traditional person-to-person paper] payment methods on . Only approved electronic methods will be allowed.\" As a seller, now prohibits me from even using the words that describe what those traditional paper-transaction payment methods are. strongly encourages all buyers to pay for their items by using PayPal (previously an -owned company). I accept PayPal, and encourage you to use it, but I will not force you to use it. \'s rules also state \"A seller can accept [paper payments] from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit [paper payments] from a buyer.\" So, let me be clear, I am not, in any way, soliciting you to use any payment method other than PayPal, I am simply informing you (the buyer) of all of \'s rules, which state that if you (the buyer) request a different payment option other than PayPal, I can accept it.
