Very nice half of a 3-inch Dyer Shell. This type of projectile, used during the Civil War, was fired from 3-inch Ordnance Rifles. The shell has been cut in half to display the interior. This is the other half of the shell, one half sold recently. As shown in the photo, the powder train has been completely emptied, leaving just the surrounding matrix. The shell is inert and harmless. The threaded fuse hole is clearly visible. This is great display piece and educational tool to show the inner workings of early rifled projectiles that were evolving rapidly during the Civil War.
