GEORGE McCLELLAN (1826-1885). George McClellan began his militarycareer with the Engineers Corps during the Mexican War, later being transferredto the cavalry. He rose to prominence though as a Major General and secondoverall commander of the Union Army during the Civil War. He was largelyresponsible for the raising and equipping of the eventually victorious Northernfield army. Yet his overly cautious nature which led to his failure in thePeninsula Campaign, and his inability to pursue Lee after Antietam,stifled his performance in battle, and led to his eventual removal by Pres.Lincoln. McClellan would go on to run against Lincoln in 1864 for the Presidency but failedto win. He would later serve as Governor of New Jersey from 1878 until 1881.
