original Civil Warletterincluding the cover. The date is hard to read, the writer mentions the death remains of Abraham Lincoln so the date appears to be Apr 28/65. The cover has the send to address of Hackensack New Jersey. The letter reads:

My Dear Mrs. Williams

Does Annie say \"Isabella\" yet? It is not a week since I left Hackensack............Monday I suppose the papers informed you the train containing the remains of our late beloved President passed through this city, and I hadthe sad pleasure of seeing it, it made no long stop, just a few minutes at each depot, but passing very slowly along the track. The scene was inepressibly mournful, the slow moving train and the pilot engine tolling its bell, as the train advanced was the only sound that broke the stillness, for although all Newark was out, yet there was not a motion from the immense crowd while the train passed: four years ago Abraham Lincoln passed through this city, how different the scene of Monday: Tuesday we all went over to N.Y to see the procession I was fearful that we would not be able to get any sort of position, but Father went over Monday afternoon, to a store of a friend of his, who is opposite Mason, Brothers, of course all his windows were engaged, but he said if Father liked it the roof was left and he could have that, it was a four story building with flat roof...............we could see Broadway from Trinity to Grace.........we could distinguish perfectly every person in the procession, the only trouble was that we could not see under the canopy of the funeral car..........are you not glad that Booth is killed. It seems almost too good to be true, though I don\'t know but I should have liked it better if they could have taken him without shooting him and then made him has wear and stain marks, the cover has you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you for looking. Please note I list new items every week.
