[ The Fire Zouaves ]

This regiment was organized in New York City in May 1861, originally under the designation the Fourth Excelsior Regiment, as a Zouave regiment, known for its unusual dress and drill style. The uniform worn by this regiment consisted of a dark blue chasseur jacket with light blue trim and light blue trefoils on each sleeve, sky blue chassuer trousers with two white stripes down each leg, brown leather gaiters, a light blue kepi with a dark blue band and dark blue piping, and a red Zouave fez with a blue tassel as a fatigue cap...~~Wikipedia

A group of 6 four page newspapers in various conditions., no odors. One issue has a good section missing upper right area affecting a column of words., however, most of the content is untouched., all with some foxing and brown spots from age and storage. all folded as were stored on the historical society shelf., These issue are not as dark as our camera shows, they are nice bright white., a good number does have those defects, repaired using acid free mendings.

[ Most of these came from the famous AAS, their duplicate issues.]..the 1861 issues are from the very first part of the Civil War., the news from the famous NY Fire Zouaves., and now camped near Washington...much on Missouri., and early skirmishes and battles in Virginia....

Some 300,000 volunteers have come forward., all officers must take the Oath., report Rebels at Harper\'s Ferry [ the armory loaded with ammo, powder and weapons ]. News from Kentucky tells of a slave rebellion...

News of the steamboat \"Stonewall Jackson\" taken and she now fly\'s the Stars and Stripes. Large section on front page of the Nov. 9, 1865 issue that gives a huge account of the possible pardon of Jefferson Davis...the Germans in Texas during the war, the recent address by the Governor of Florida...the May 26, 1865 issue has front page column headlines on the capture of Jefferson Davis with full details., [ his beautiful dress, with matching pumps, and hat, with purse---just kidding ]. Front page details about Dr. Mudd and his part with the Rebels. Many freed slaves take the stand and testify....loads more in these many issues.....
