This is a new and never used reproduction cartridge box for the .54 cal. Mississippi Rifle with the single tin and the small U.S. box plate (much smaller than the plate for the .58 cal. boxes, which came later.)This boxwas designed for round ball cartridges and saw service in the Mexican War before being used again in the Civil War. Southern arsenals had lots of these on hand and issued them by the thousands, so these little boxes actually saw more use in Confederate armies than Union armies.C & DJarnagin makes the vest Civil War leather gear, and they are the only company making this type of box. they made this one, and you can get it new in this sale without the long wait to have it made. This is like new, never used and still mint.
